Make sure you know what you are doing or you can end up in a situation where both of your GPUs are toast. ^As you can see, there are a ton of things that can go wrong when installing an MXM in the M6800, but I heard the M6700 is easier to work with. Make sure that the entire adhesive is intact on the x-bracket as the bare metal will short your card and kill it. Using a screwdriver and inserting it into the threads will WARP your old GPU, which may cause issues. It may be a good idea to apply some heat to the old GPU with a hair dryer to weaken the adhesive bond holding the x-bracket on. If the GPU does not come with an x-bracket, you can pull the one from your old GPU. This will cause clearance issues with every other part of the GPU and something will burn up if care is not taken to put the thermal pads on the GPU first. While you drop the heatsink with the applied thermal pad down on the GPU, the thermal pad for the row of black capacitors will stack on the R22 thermal pad. For example, placing a thermal pad on the heatsink where it is supposed to hit the row of black capacitors and another one on the right R22 capacitor will cause a stacking issue. the Kepler MXM layout, the positioning of the components has shifted somewhat. Due to the differences in the Maxwell MXM layout vs. Visual inspection is key before final installation, play around with the thermal pads on the GPU before installation or it will throttle bad or burn up.Ī word of advice when placing thermal pads, place them ON THE GPU, NOT THE HEATSINK. For me, the stock thermal pads DID NOT get the job done, I had to use thicker pads on the mosfets (3 on top, two on the right hand side) at 1.5mm. Make sure that thermal pads make GOOD contact upon installation of the 970/980M. Make sure to clean the heatsink off for any metal shards as these can fall into your system during installation and cause a slew of problems. I used a rotary tool from walmart to get the job done. Cut the copper portion to make room for the extra capacitor placed on these cards (the big square ones labelled "R22"). I would recommend the NVIDIA heatsink, part #k6d33. For those reading this post, there will need to be a hardware modification done to the heatsink before installation of these gpus. I can personally attest that the Dell M6800 can work with either the GTX 970M or 980M.
